Honorable Mentions 2000

So, I am trying to catch up all my best book lists to the current year.....along with the best books one through ten each year, I had other books that were extremely great and wanted to place my "stamp of approval" on. This led to having an Honorable Mention List each year. The list in 2000 was quite lengthy.........(in no particular order).....

  1. Blackbird by Jennifer Lauck*
  2. On Writing by Stephen King* ( I should have had this book in the Top 10)
  3. A Widow, A Chihuahua, and Harry Truman by Mary Beth Crain
  4. Pay it Forward by Catherine Ryan Hyde
  5. Holes by Lois Sachar*
  6. Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri*
  7. A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers*
  8. Slow Motion by Dani Shapiro*
  9. Safekeeping by Abigail Thomas*
  10. White Teeth by Zadie Smith
  11. Small Steps by Peg Kehert
  12. The Giggler Treatment by Roddy Doyle*
  13. Love, Loss, and What I Wore by Ilene Beckerman*
  14. My Own Country by Abraham Verghese*
  15. Fathers Aren't Supposed to Die by T.M. Shine
  16. Getting Over It by Anna Maxted
  17. Babyface by Jeanne McDermott
  18. Dating Big Bird by Laura Zigman
  19. Traveling Mercies by Annie Lamott*
  20. The Hungry Ocean by Linda Greenlaw
  21. London Holiday by Richard Peck

*= still highly recommended (which means the books without an asterix are great reads but do not really stand the test of time as I look back)

I feel very learned today as I look over your list and can see that I have read quite a few of those books. I loved Traveling Mercies, which I have bought quite a few times as gifts and led me to read most of Annie Lammont. Loved Blackbird and the sequel and EVERYTHING Peg Kehert...and of course Holes... and Richard Peck- a great storyteller! Great list! How was Banana Shpeel? See you Tues. Dinner? Let me know- I have yearbook again until 4:10, but can probably make it there by 4:40. Happy Sundaying
